my presents are all wrapped. I used the gorgeous frankie posters/calenders again this year as I really loved the look of them last year and there were a few giggles as everyone opened them to reveal the calenders inside with my notes of dates and things to remember. I really love the black and white animal illustration this year as well as the world map.

I didn't quite have enough with the November/December calender still on the fridge so ended up using one of my past favourites (the last image) which turns out is from 2008!!! Which brings me to this question..how long do you keep your frankie calender/posters for? which then brings me to the next question...how long do your keep your frankie magazines for? I have every edition of frankie since I first came across it which would have been in 2007 at least! They are nicely stacked in two piles (towers) with other lovely magazines: real living, country style, peppermint, donna hay and inside out...none of which I can bring myself to throw out or give away..why? Each time I sit down to go through them I feel inspired so they go back in their colourful piles.

Well, enough rambling from me, I would like to wish you all a Merry Christmas and lots of laughs and fun with your family and friends this festive season xo

I love/want/need the cloud cushion by harvest textiles in this poster! This year has gone by so quickly, it's been a busy year filled with fun and exciting things behind the scenes here at hot toffee. Now the year is at the point where is goes by at light speed. The May Markit was lots of fun and I'm looking forward to having a stall at the November one. I'm working on some special little treats with my treasure box of 'mistakes' that will only be available at upcoming markets and possibly in my big cartel shop. I found myself looking up a lot over the 4 days at Melbourne Life Instyle. The Royal Exhibition Building is breath taking!

Julie Fleming was my neighbour again and kept me entertained with her stories, charm and wit.

My plan was to take some photos of my empty space and then a few during set up and of course after set up BUT these two photos are the only ones I took! Both taken on set up day.

So now it's back to production, firing the kiln, sanding glass and finishing pieces off to send to my lovely stockists.

My bags are just about packed for life instyle - only a few more things to squeeze in! These are a shots of some of the essentials: business cards, props, hot toffee sign etc. It has been organised chaos here over the last few weeks as I figure out once again how to fit a whole trade show display into a single suitcase - I do love this challenge. I'm really looking forward to visiting Melbourne again - it seems to cast some kind of magic over me.

These are easy, delicious and the recipe worked well with gluten free substitutes. I came across the recipe through the black apple who found it via smitten kitchen who adapted the recipe from this book by Wayne Brachman. I used the sugar quantities that Emily used as I like my cookies a wee bit chewy too. I also only used butter for the filling instead of shortening. We didn't have quite enough icing sugar in the house so my filling is a little soft but oh so good! (and easy enough to spread with just the back of a spoon)

It has been 4 or 5 years since I had a real oreo and these homemade ones seem to taste very close to my memory of the real deal!

Not long ago I attended the launch of Pia Jane Bijkerk's new book 'my heart wanders' and what a lovely afternoon it was! The title resonates with me as my own heart wandered overseas to live in the land of the rising sun several years ago. I really enjoyed having a little chat with Pia as she was signing my copy of the book and was quite taken with actually hearing the sound of her voice. Pia's blog 'enhance the everyday' is one of my absolute favourites and to hear the author's voice after reading her blog voice for so long was really special.

Everyone who went to the launch also received this sweet 'my heart wanders' brooch made by Kylie from Paper Boat Press.

Sitting in the warmth of the sun the following afternoon I read the book from cover to cover and loved it. I could relate to so many of the things Pia mentioned and wished I was able to articulate them myself. Over the years I've found myself trying to express feelings that Pia was able to do so beautifully. A few tears were even shed as I saw into the soul of this kindred spirit. Thank you Pia for sharing your story xx

The Reincarnated Kimono Project

Melanie has done a blog tour of 'The Reincarnated Kimono Project' over here. The exhibition is held at Hanasho in West End and runs until April 30.

The above photos were taken by Melanie and are of my work titled 'Kiryu' after my first home in Japan. I had proposed to do a different work but a few days before sitting down to work on it I received sad news - Sunaga san (my first boss & father figure in Japan) had passed away. How ever hard I tried to work on my original idea it just seemed to look and feel empty. That's when I began to play with the vintage kimono fabric with Sunaga san in my thoughts. As he was such a thoughtful, gentle and kind man I was drawn to the softer, more subtle colours in the background of the fabric. Remembering conversations with Sunaga san, I carefully folded the fabric and cut an abstract tear shape to produce multiples. I love the fine details that are present in each little droplet as if they each hold their own special memory.

Firstly sorry for my absence lately. I've been keeping myself busy and trying to keep our life as normal as possible because we can. Ryo's family and our friends are all safe but their lives have been interrupted by the recent disasters in Japan. Living with aftershocks, lining up for groceries, living without hot water, trying to rebuild their lives ..I feel we owe it to them to keep on going.
to not stop.

While we feel quite helpless there are many ways we can help and one of them is to raise money to help Japan. Donations can be made directly to the Red Cross Japan Disaster Appeal.

Last night I attended the opening for 'The Reincarnated Kimono Project' at Hanasho in West End. The exhibition was curated by Melanie from kimono reincarnate. The two vintage kimonos above were carefully dis-assembled and the fabric distributed to fifteen local artists, all to reinterpret in their own way. Gold coin donations were taken to raise money and part of the proceeds from sales of the works will also be donated to help Japan. The exhibition runs until 30 April, so please pop in to hanasho and view the artworks. ( I will write more about some of the artists soon)

Other artists raising money for Japan are included in the i heART japan auction organised by ceramic artist, Kenji and his wife Sonia. The auction has started and will end at 8pm Sunday 10 April. All the works in the auction have been donated by the artists. It's a great chance to collect art work while supporting an important cause.

A Japanese friend living in Scotland raised over 1000 pounds by baking and selling cakes with a friend! Awesome work Toshiko!

Tomorrow (Saturday 9 April) night the above event is taking place to raise money. More details about Jam for Japan can be found here. Ryo loves the didgeridoo so we are looking forward to seeing that act in particular.

It was such a relief to see some dear friends who live in Fukushima and arrived in Australia almost a week after the earthquake hit. They left their home and headed south because of what was happening at the nuclear power plant. With a young daughter they decided their best option was to head to Jacquie's Australian home. They have set up a bank account to help their city back in Japan. Here are the details in Jacquie's words:

We have done it!!!! We have set up an account at Westpac to raise money for our village. Westpac Kenmore have opened a fee free account and will cover all costs to send the money to Japan.They have also offered to have a free dress day at their branch and a sausage sizzle to help with raising money for Kitaibaraki.Our town is called Kitaibaraki, located at the very top of Ibaraki Prefecture, on the border of Fukushima Prefecture. 200 km north of Tokyo, 70 km south of the Fukushima nuclear plant. Not only was this town rocked by the earthquake, it was also hit by the tsunami, in which many people lost everything they own. During a phone call to Japan today we heard also that the school, in which half the township has evacuated to, is also badly damaged. We realise that many charities will be donating to Japan, but we would like to help with our community, which could possibly miss out due to size and location.We understand that there have been many disasters this year and in turn many charities asking for assistance but please remember that any donation, no matter how small, will help our family and friends over in Japan rebuild their lives.

When I was packing these wind chime earrings the other day they reminded me of when my bag goes through the x-ray security check at airports. I always enjoy seeing the outline/silhouette of hundreds of pairs of earrings up on the screen and would love love love! to have that image printed out one day.

I always feel more awake while travelling interstate for Life Instyle. The trip to the venue and the sites along the way some how make me feel like a country girl with eyes wide opened in the big smoke!

I love that Sydney still has old boats and ferries. It adds so much character to the city.

This is a photo of Hyde Park and St Mary's Cathedral taken from the bus. One morning I noticed a lot of people walking through the park on their way to work and amidst that was a scene of serenity - a lady in her own world practising Tai Chi.

I really enjoy meeting both existing and new hot toffee stockists too. It's lovely to be able to chat face to face with someone you've been dealing with mostly by email.

What I love most about when I'm in Sydney is the chance to share meals, wine and stories with my sweet sister x

This time I even squeezed in a movie (and popcorn) one evening at this gorgeous old movie theatre.

So now I'm back in my little home studio working away on orders which is fun and rewarding in a completely different way to being out and about in the world.

I've written about this little vase before..it used to have 2 wings but somewhere along the way one was broken. It sits in my tin of pens & pencils right next to me here at the computer...and when the afternoon sun shines in ......it's so pretty

It was over many delicious meals and glasses (sometimes bottles) of wine when we lived in Japan that I intently listened to and encouraged a dear friend who dreamed of opening a restaurant. To make the dream come alive this friend went to cooking school, worked in a restaurant to learn more, practiced and perfected cooking methods and basically lived and breathed food.

About a year ago cerca trova opened. When we returned to the town we used to live in we headed to the restaurant to surprise and congratulate said friend. Simple and elegant, serving beautiful food... including creme brulee to die for.

There's nothing I love more than seeing friends make their dreams happen.

Just popping in to say hello as I've not been blogging much. I'm in full preparation mode for life instyle which is in Sydney in two weeks time. There is still so much to do but taking time out to play with flowers from the local florist has been quite fun and therapeutic so thought I'd share them with you too xx

I will more than likely be absent for a while but will try to pop in with photos of the pretty flowers... I know they are lifting my spirits so am thinking 'why not share a bit of that'.

spotting this sign on my daily trip in to Laidley was quite uplifting! The florist is one of the shops that has been out of action since the floods - that is more then 2 weeks - closed, cleaning, repairing etc. It's sad to see quite a few shops (all small, locally owned businesses) damaged in the flood...about 6 of them so badly there is still no sign of them re-opening. I keep hoping to see a hint of them getting back on their feet but have heard the buildings have structural damage so it could be a while yet!

Usually I pluck flowers from our garden but had been thinking it would be nice to help support the young owner (whose grandmother owned the florist many years ago) when she re-opens...a stem every couple of days...I know it's only a small gesture but over time the little interactions make a difference...

so today it was a stem of miniature daisies, pretty yes?

Hello, I hope everyone is safe and dry. It seems my internet is back on which is great. I've been popping in to check emails once a day using Ryo's wireless internet thingy. These photos are of the main street of Laidley and were taken by Pippa Scupham-O'Shea on Tuesday 11th. The very next day the water had completely receded and the clean up was underway.

There are scenes like this and worse right across Queensland with many places still under water and others waiting anxiously as flood levels rise. 75% of Queensland has now been affected by floods this year! The clean up is going to take many many months. People have lost loved ones, homes and livelihoods. If you'd like to help raise much needed funds donations can be made to the Premiers Flood Relief Appeal. The brisStyle girls have also set up the 'BrisStyle Handmade Ark Flood Appeal' with money raised being donated to the Premiers Flood Relief Fund. There are more details here. It's custom for groups of friends to perform at friends' weddings in Japan. This can be singing, playing musical instruments, acting, skits, jokes you name it and it is performed - performed very well too! A lot of time and effort goes into practicing and perfecting the performance for the special day. This clever video clip was made by friends of friends in Japan as one of these special wedding performances. I received the link on the weekend and loved it so much I emailed back asking permission to share it here. The answer was yes, the makers are quite thrilled the video is being watched in other countries.
The title of the film is 2323 (this particular group of friends soccer team) x pika pika (shiny, sparkly, lights)

Happy 2011! I hope everyone had a lovely Christmas and has had a positive start to 2011. I've spent a lot of time cleaning, culling and generally trying to declutter our home. We are both collectors of odd objects and seem to accumulate treasures quickly. Recently I've been feeling like I'm collecting 'other people's junk'. Don't get me wrong, I love other people's junk! But I also need empty space as it balances everything out. So my aim for this year is to try to clear out the clutter in order to create more empty space and not to accumulate - this will be difficult as I really enjoy popping into op shops and garage sales. In fact I saw a sign on my local op shop saying OPENING SALE January 10! Tempting? Absolutely! I couldn't help but peek in the window. Let's see how I go x

It's been a little quiet here on the blog again. Lots has happened in the past few weeks with me moving my studio out to mimmis and then after a lot of thought and looking at things from various angles moving it back home again. I loved working & chatting with Miriam and was getting my work done but was carting glass back and forth and still working from home anyway so decided to move it all back here. A selection of hot toffee studs will still be available at mimmis and I'll be visiting regularly.

With Christmas orders all in the post, this afternoon was a time to play. I've decided to wrap our gifts with the frankie pullout calenders that I've collected over the past year or so and thought that tags made from this calender which was still hanging around my studio would be cute. Now all they need is some pretty string...

..Pochi and I were out in the yard working on Ryo's Christmas present. We were painting and putting P's footprints on a pair of shorts. The reason? A few years ago we had a 'homemade' Christmas and my chef brother hand painted food on clothing for each member of the family. Ryo loved his shorts with radishes painted down the side so much that he had almost worn them out so Pochi and I set about to create a new pair for him. He wears them all the time! I had fun and printed the below photo onto some lovely stock and made it into a swing tag.

I was actually looking through my files from last year for a Christmassy photo because I wanted to share some of the Christmas markets that are happening around the place but was distracted by these photos of pochi x

Ok, so shopping in Japan is just as fun as I remember it to be BUT so much more overwhelming than I recall. Amazing products every which way you look can make it a wee bit difficult to choose things and the fact that things are readily available and easy to find means that sense of 'i have to have it NOW' is somewhat lost as visual overload sets in. Still there were things I just had to have and things that I thought I bought but didn't and things I was thinking about on the plane trip home that I'd forgotten to buy!

I wanted also to go to some of the little shops I frequented often when living in Japan but sadly they had closed. It seems the financial crisis has affected our little town. The stationery shop I visited almost daily for 4 and a half years. closed. For the longest time I've been planning to stock up on my favourite pens and sketch books while seeing the friendly face of the man who owned that shop. I was still able to stock up on my favs from other shops so all was not lost!

This year my family are doing a second hand Christmas. Yes. All presents will be second hand. So over the last 12 months I've spent a fair amount of time in op shops, at garage sales and in antique stores which has been lots of fun. As we still have a few gifts to find, Ryo and I set out on a little rainy road trip to a few garage sales on the weekend and while we didn't find any gifts for others I did find a few treasures for our home and props for markets, trade fairs and product shots. The blanket is my favourite and after a good wash it will be used often.

Yesterday I said I'd share goodies bought in Japan but still haven't taken photos of them so instead will share some of the gifts we took with us. Pretty aren't they!

kawaii is a word that is used a lot in Japan and no wonder with cute design in ordinary everyday objects including take-away coffee cups. I loved these simple line drawings so much that I saved that label and tucked it away in my suitcase. When we lived in Japan I did the same thing only it was sketch books, envelopes and little boxes that treasures were tucked safely into. Soon (when I get the chance to photograph them) I will share some of the goodies bought on our recent trip.

What a great name for a shop and look at those herbs in olive tins - what a fresh window display! This new shop in Mildura is run by sisters Annie and Shell who say 'Mildura is actually a VERY fine & sunny place & we have lots of clear blue sky days..... sounds great hey!'

After meeting the girls I'm convinced the name also reflects their personalities as they are both lovely, sunny, happy souls. Congratulations on the shop Annie and Shell xx

Look at this clever display by Sue Bailey who loves printer’s trays – her grandfather bought one for her when she was little and she had her collection of treasured whimsy ornaments in there for years.

Sue recently opened her lovely shop in Richmond Victoria called 'Lily and the Weasel'. A lovely old shop front and stained glass features are just a couple of the appealing characteristics which Sue has mentioned. I'm so excited that hot toffee is now available here and can't wait to visit when next in Melbourne.

This empty space is now home to mimmis run by Miriam from bubba chenille and is filled with furniture and lovely goodies many of which are handmade. So with that in mind I have been getting some really cheap Zucchinis at the moment and it was time for Zucchini Gluten Free Slice!

These hand cut brooches were made by Samantha over at jetta's nest. I love the contrast between the rawness of the wood and the delicate doily patterns which are hand drawn. Just popping in to say 'if you haven't already then please try the coconutty shuku shuku recipe in the Sept/Oct issue of frankie magazine & sweet treats cookbook'
I made some this afternoon and while my end result looked a bit different to the frankie pic these were so yummy... little parcels of YUM! To make mine gluten free all I did was substitute the flour and icing sugar with gluten free alternatives.

My mum has coughed for most of her life. Coughed because of anything and everything.....coughed when waking up; coughed after drinking wine; coughed when cooking; coughing, coughing, coughing.....and noone knew (doctors) what was wrong. And when I became a chef and started learning about intollerances and allergies Mum and I thought it might be from gluten. After tests and more tests, Mum was told she was gluten intollerant. Surprise, surprise

You have heard this story before right?

So I have altered the Bakewell Slice to gluten free.....bet you can't taste the difference....and if you don't do gluten free just substitute the gf flour for plain flour.

with all the work that's going on around here I've been very careful to ensure I have proper breaks, after all one of the perks of working for your self is supposed to be freedom right? {Excuse the blankets and pillows, there have been a few nights of sleeping by the fire.}

Photo taken from the kitchen. Work station two is situated right as we walk in the front door and is where the bird & star garlands and necklaces are threaded and packed. The plan is to complete all work which needs to be done here today and surprise Ryo by having the table packed up and the room returned to normal by the time he gets home tonight. Wish me luck with that one! The good thing about work station two is that I can see the television (which lost it's colour and has only displayed black and white for a good 12 months now) from there and have enjoyed quite a few mid-day movies over the past couple of weeks as I work.

Just thought I'd pop in to say hello. Things have been quite busy at the hot toffee studio since returning from life in style. I have really taken over the house this time! Work station one is actually in my studio and this is where glass is cut, fired, cleaned, sanded and made into the final product. ( The rest of the studio looks like a bomb has hit it as things that aren't needed immediately are piled upon other things which need to be filed etc )

It was so nice last Sunday to wake up at my brother and his gorgeous wife's home and share a homemade breakfast {gluten free pancakes + apple & rhubarb compote} with my sister who had flown in for the weekend to join us. After filling our bellies we headed out in the direction of wineries. The morning was misty and wet which only enhanced our little adventure making it more exciting as we drove down dirt roads in search of a good 'red'.

oh what fun we had hopping from one cellar door to another: talking, dreaming, sipping, eating and laughing until our tummies hurt!

"Yeah it is really easy....let me tell you..."

So many customers are suprised when I tell them that it is only three ingredients, and they can buy them and just make up a batch of plain gluten free flour themselves.

something stirs inside me when I visit Melbourne and creates an energy which I don't often have. This time was no different. I didn't want to miss anything so on the first morning I found myself wondering the streets when it was still dark. It was cold and sprinkling which made it even more enticing! These photos were taken around 6am at Queen Victoria Markets and in a little side street near there. Most of the stalls hadn't set up but I was lucky to score some fresh strawberries from one of the fruit vendors. delicious.

I will share some more photos here in the next week but for now will simply say MELBOURNE: i love you. even more so in the rain.

Windsor Deli: Thai Herbal Soup

Alan and I went to Thailand in June.

Belated honeymoon (a year late); needed holiday from the deli and in desperate need of some Vitamin D (fluro lights for a year don't count!).

One of the main things that we wanted to do was go to a Thai Cookery School.

We learnt some gorgeous dishes from wonderful Thai Chefs and this one is my favourite, Thai Herbal Soup or Kaeng Leang.

The biggest tip for this dish: Buy Black Tiger Prawns, they are perfect for this dish.

I loved these sweet plants the first time I saw them at hanasho and finally bought one home last year. After planting it in a shady spot in the garden hoping it would fill it with pretty purple and white flowers I happily went upstairs. Only 5 minutes later I looked down from the deck into the garden to see how it looked but instead I saw Pochi with it in his mouth. cheeky! needless to say: that shady patch of the garden is still bare x

If you've not yet visited hanasho in West End {opposite the library}, please do as it is well worth the visit, Eba san has an amazing sense of aesthetic and an incredible eye for both positive and negative space. Each time I pop in he is working on a new project which could be anything from a wood block print to a test tube vase...I leave feeling inspired and grateful for knowing this soul!

Windsor Deli: Gluten free Garibaldi

"Squashed fly slice" or "Fly cemetary" to so many Australians. What a terrible name for something so buttery and flaky and fruity!

It is called Garibaldi and I found it in a book that my Dad brought back from America for me a few years ago. I started making it at the deli about 6 months ago when I needed a shortbread that I thought kids could take to school and I found that the older generations just loved it as it brought back so many memories of the version of the English Garibaldi Slice!

The great thing about this buttery shortbread is that I have now made it into a gluten free version. I know that it will work well with your cup of tea in the morning or for a great morning tea to take to a friends house.

I'm planning a mostly quiet weekend, I'll probably visit a couple of garage sales, potter (= do some desperately needed weeding!!) in the garden, walk with pochi, drink wine with Ryo, watch the sun set and eat some yummy food.

..is just one reason I love the library! The 'impossible pie' is from this cookbook. I made it last week but didn't photograph it so this photo is from the book itself. It was so simple and so yum! All I did was substitute the flour with gluten free flour and the milk with rice milk.

I always feel quite rich when visiting the library. Maybe it's because I have access to so many books and when I can't afford to buy my favourite magazines I can borrow them so I never miss out!

Yesterday after enjoying morning tea and giggles with an old friend and her little people in the park I stopped by coming up roses* to take some photos. (I was so excited earlier this year when coming up roses* became a hot toffee stockist and have desperately been wanting to photograph the shop before sharing the news here.) This is one of the loveliest shops I've ever been in. Managed by Lorraine and Sarah it has such a beautiful selection of products which are just so exquisitely displayed. From the price tags to window displays the tiniest of details are lovingly given the attention they deserve. I highly recommend a visit!

Oh and just in case you are wondering.....yes, I did come home with my very own copy of Pia Jane Bijkerk's AMSTERDAM: MADE BY HAND.

Since finishing teaching I have been very strict with my hot toffee working times and so far it's going well. Set times for checking emails, cutting glass, packaging, morning tea, lunch etc mean I'm working more efficiently than before. It's very easy when working from home to procrastinate.very. very. easy and I'm determined not to fall into this trap. So, Wednesdays are my day to get out of the studio (and home) to visit stockists, suppliers and the odd coffee shop :). Yesterday saw me dropping some stock into Province Modern Country in Ipswich and having a lovely chat with store owner Naomi. It's always a pleasure to visit this store. Fresh flowers greet you near the entrance as treasures from near and far lay within.

I've been wanting for a long time to have a side bar on both sides of my blog posts so upon seeing the new blogger templates felt quite excited and started to play...not realising that what I was doing was making live changes to my blog..ooops AND I can't figure out how to get my old blog settings back...eeek!! So, I've now been sitting here on a Saturday changing my blog and will be rearranging things here and there so please bare with me through the 'not ready for change' changes that I'm making. I'm usually someone who likes to take baby steps and think a lot before making changes so I'm a little out of my comfort zone.. but also having fun.

A couple of months ago my brother mentioned that his good friend, Katrina was trialing gluten free food and was keeping a record of this on her blog..I was instantly interested as Katrina and her husband Alan are both chefs and own Windsor Deli in Windsor, Victoria. I visited the Windsor Deli blog and tried the muffin recipe within a couple of days. I was pleasantly surprised as a lot of gluten free food is lacking in texture....but these apple muffins were fluffy AND yummy!! (sorry no photos as they were gobbled up very quickly)

After contacting Katrina to express my excitement about what she and Alan were doing she kindly sent me a batch of the GF flour they make along with some hand written recipes!

I've since tried several of Windsor Deli's Gluten Free recipes including the pancakes, gnocchi and choc caramel tart - the textures and flavours are amazing which has inspired me to cook more which has ultimately reignited my passion for food and cooking. I can't wait to try these Souffles, my mouth waters just looking at the photos..yum.

Katrina is currently working on a gluten free pizza base recipe so I'll keep you posted. (I know there are a few friends out there who are also living life gluten free so I will aim to photograph and document the recipes I try)
